Eternia Origins Part 4. Enter The Horde

In Eternia's new age of prosperity, no one could've known thier planet was being watched and coveted by beings from another world. A world on the other side of the galaxy called Despondos. A wormhole is opened, and the free lands of Eternia are attacked without warning by Hordak and his Evil Horde.

Skeletor determines the Horde is unstoppable. Rather than waiting to be conquered, he joins the conquerors .

His ruthless tactics and smart strategies make him a valuable asset, and he is quickly given his own command.  His first campaign is against the tribe of Beast Men, granting Rqazz the revenge he has so long desired. Rqazz defeats his former Chieftain on the battlefield, and rips the Talisman from his lifeless body.

Skeletor rises through the ranks. An impressed Hordak takes him on as his apprentice, teaching him dark arts only allowed to a privileged few.  Skeletor takes full advantage of the opportunity, and pretends complete loyalty to Hordak while secretly planning to overthrow his master. Hordak is no fool, however, and intends to dispose of his pupil once his usefulness is done.

The Horde is poised to overtake Eternos, the capital city of Eternia. But an unexpected development spoils all of Hordak's plans. The warrior goddess Sharella has made a devil's pact with the Snake People. In exchange for them joining the war against The Horde, she vows to find a way to release their ancient leader King Hiss from the Void and restore the Snake People to their former power, in alliance with Eternos.

As high priestess of the Snake People, she is given the Staff of Ka. It's power transforms her into the Green Goddess. Art by Nate Baertsch

The Horde is unable to cope with the combined might of it's enemies, and Hordak's fortress is about to be overrun. Hordak calls Skeletor to his temple. He presents to him the two halves of the Power Sword, forged by unknown hands during the Great Wars. When joined, the swords will ignite a flame that can open a pathway to any dimension. This is why Hordak made Skeletor his apprentice; only with their combined sorcery will they be strong enough to unite the light and dark halves of the Sword and use it to bring reinforcements from Despondos. Skeletor is given the dark half. They perform the spell and join the swords.  The dimensional doorway is opened, but unexpectedly, a telepathic link is made between Hordak and Skeletor, who each still have a grip on the Power Sword.  The intended treachery of each sorcerer becomes known to the other.  Hordak tries to pull the Power Sword away, but Skeletor forces it to separate and turns the power of the dark half on him in an effort to force him through the portal.

Sharella and her warriors enter the temple in time to witness the struggle. She uses the magic of her Cobra Staff to snatch the light half of the Sword from Hordak just as he is pushed through the dimensional barrier and the portal closes.  Skeletor uses the dark half to teleport away and escape.

Connection to He-Man And The Power Sword

The events told here explain how Skeletor aquired his half of the Power Sword, which was something never revealed in this first mini comic.  The other half was hidden inside Castle Grayskull by the Green Goddess Sharella, who chose the location for it's obscurity at the time.
